Diabetic Assessments

During General Footcare at Stride Clinic, if you have Diabetes, our practitioners will always carry out checks, observing and noting the following in your feet and legs.

They will also advise you regarding footwear, hosiery or socks and self-care.

Once a year we advise that you book in for an Annual Diabetic Assessment. This is an extended appointment during which we do not carry out General Footcare.

During your appointment we carry out our usual checks and update your medical records. This is followed by a Vascular Assessment which includes an ABPI (Ankle Brachial Pressure Index). An ABPI measures the arterial circulation (blood vessels that carry blood away from your heart) in your legs. During the assessment you will be asked to remove your shoes and socks and lie flat on the plinth. After 10 minutes we will measure the blood pressure in both your feet and arms using a blood pressure cuff. We also listen to the arterial sounds in your feet using a small machine called a Doppler. Most people have two pulses in each foot and a doppler ultrasound test will tell the podiatrist the how good these are.

We will also carry out a Neurological Assessment. This involves a series of tests to challenge the different types of nerve endings in the foot.

The importance of an Annual Diabetic Assessment is to allow comprehensive monitoring of how Diabetes is affecting your lower limb in order to predict at risk areas and prevent ulceration, amputations and mobility issues associated with peripheral neuropathy.

Following your assessment we will provide you with a report of the findings and share this with your GP.
